A focus on fins

Looking to achieve a light, frameless glass design? This is where fins come in...

Glass fins, made of tempered laminated glass of multiple layers, are used to hold together complete glass walls and façades. They are the most commonly used element in all-glass structures, providing maximum transparency and open views with no obstructions. For glazing projects where high transparency is a must, glass fins are a great solution, eliminating the need for conventional metal mullions and beams and instead using vertical, tempered glass mullions as structural support.

Dating back to the 1950s, glass fins represent the earliest form of structural glass façade. They became popular in the 1970s thanks to the Willis Faber & Dumas Building in Ipswich, which had a curving façade with suspended multiple plates of reflective glass. This was one of the first examples of a frameless glass façade on a building, and served as inspiration for many other projects worldwide from that decade until present day.

With their ability to provide a modern look, excellent transparency, strength and durability, glass fin
walls are an excellent point-supported structural glazing system option, and they can be cost-effective too. Glass fin walls are suitable for all sizes of project, providing a stylish look for anything from store-fronts to grand multiple-storey building façades. Their versatility, and ability to create a seamless inside-outside transition, is unparalleled.
