Happy Birthday Australasia
For the last decade, a striking glass pyramid has marked the location of a slice of Australia in the heart of industrial Manchester. Underground restaurant Australasia opened in the Spinningfields district in 2011 and has since become one of the city’s most popular eateries. At Gray & Dick, we’d like to think that its success may be in part attributable to its stylish glass entrance. 

Australasia’s glass pyramid was designed by architect Michelle Derbyshire and created by Gray & Dick. The aim was to create a landmark feature that would also serve the purpose of increasing light flow into the down-under space. Now in its tenth year, the iconic glass entryway is as fresh as the flavours of Australasia’s Pacific Rim inspired menu served below it. The pyramid was built to last with toughened glass, a glass product five times stronger than ordinary glass. The glass structure transports diners into another world and helps to create a truly memorable experience.  

Come rain or shine
Another Manchester restaurant project Gray & Dick was proud to work on was the redevelopment of The Ivy, Manchester. After completing the glazing and feature steelwork of the North West’s then new Ivy Restaurant in 2018, we were commissioned to alter and enclose the roof terrace. One of the main design principles was a fully retractable glass roof that would allow visitors to The Ivy Roof Garden to enjoy their experience come the probable Mancunian rain or equally improbable shine! 

Working in partnership with retractable roof experts Libart International, we delivered a made-to-measure glass product which, at the touch of a button, allowed the roof area to retract and provide access to open air dining and spectacular views.
