Gray and Dick were proud to contribute structural glass for one of Scotland’s best loved golfing properties – Gullane Golf Club.

As golfing elites prepare to tee off for the upcoming Open event this year, Gray and Dick fondly remember their personal contributions to Scotland’s golfing scene.

In 2015, Gray and Dick joined forces with Susan Stephen Architects to finalise a significant development project at Gullane Golf Course. The clubhouse, with more than 130 years of Scottish golfing heritage, underwent an 18-month revamp that would dramatically modernise the exterior.

The property has played host to the likes of Phil Mickleson, Justin Rose and Rory McIlroy in the past. The venue now boasts a new championship course for use at the Scottish Open – representing a step change for the next generation of golfers.

Bringing golf into the 21 st Century
As part of the modern new look, Gray and Dick designed both structural glass and metalwork to support a sophisticated, welcoming façade. Likewise, the proprietors felt strongly about maintaining the building’s natural aesthetic. As a conservation area, it was important to preserve panoramic views of East Lothian’s stunning pastures.

Our structural glass design offers unfettered views across the links, while also elevating the presence of the golfer’s entrance. With a contemporary glazed design leading to a bag drop lobby, drying room and trolley store, the glass offers both style and function for some of the most famous golfing professionals in the world.

A sustainable focus
Similarly, while property owners wanted to pay homage to the area with unspoilt views, they also wanted to drive home the message of sustainability. This is reflected in the structural design: glass offers lower heating bills and more access to natural light. By conserving energy and relying on the elements, the new clubhouse design marks a generational shift towards greener practices.

Head and shoulders above the rest
The clubhouse also benefits from a stunning location, with sweeping views of the East Lothian coastline. At Gray and Dick, we understood that Gullane wanted to continue to offer world-class customer service to its members, without sacrificing sustainability or natural sea views.

Our subtle metalwork design ensured that all eyes were on the outside world. It’s only fitting, with more than 3 million people tuning in to watch The Open each year. The club was open in time for the 2015 Scottish Open after a £1.8 million investment.

Par for the course
This is just one of many golfing projects that Gray & Dick have turned their hands to, having completed a project at St Andrews’ Old Course Hotel and the St Andrews Links Trust. We understand how big a part golf has to play in Scotland’s heritage, and look forward to contributing even more to the landscape!
