From croft house to guest house: Glazed extension transforms the lodge at Blackhouse Forest Estate into an unforgettable destination.

The idyllic lodge at Blackhouse Forest Estate in the Scottish Borders has undergone a stylish redevelopment to enhance its visitor offer and serve as a hub for rural tourism. Gray & Dick was pleased to play a key role in its expansion plans.

Glazed extension
The former croft house previously restored from a derelict building into an eco-friendly lodge, features solar panels, a hydro-electric scheme and biomass boiler. Its most recent development has been the addition of a single-storey glazed extension to transform it into a contemporary staycation escape, the perfect place to reconnect with nature.

Gray & Dick designed, manufactured, and installed the bespoke bolted structural glass panel units for the glazed extension. The glass product used was double-glazed, toughened laminate – ideal for use in structural glazing and tough enough to withstand the harshest of Scottish weather. We also used a MHB door system for the extension. MHB is a patented thermally broken steel profile system used to create stunning internal and external facades and steel structures that blend form and function.

Pip Quinn, Marketing Manager at the Blackhouse Forest Estate, said: "The serene light filled space of the glass atrium at Blackhouse Forest Estate brings nature inside and forges a connection to the natural world outside. This room changes with each passing day and its stunning backdrops never tire.

The space has given guests a freedom to explore the landscape outside whilst staying cosy and sheltered from the elements. It’s the perfect place to share the day's adventures, switch off from busy schedules and stargaze into the night"

The completed glass-fronted façade, which perfectly complements the stone of the main building, affords visitors views towards the breathtaking natural woodland, heather and hills of the Yarrow Valley, an area steeped in myth and legend and where once kings of Scotland hunted. Once visited, Blackhouse Forest Estate is a place never forgotten.
