St James Quarter Edinburgh Sky-Frame

After more than half a decade in construction, the highly anticipated St James Quarter opened its doors to the public in June 2021.

Located at the east end of the city’s world-famous Princes Street, the 850,000sq ft shopping gallery will host a multitude of luxury shops, restaurants, hotels, a cinema, and a bowling alley. These elements are set to be completed in four phases through to 2022. As Edinburgh’s largest development, Gray & Dick are thrilled to have played a part in this prestigious project that will generate a welcome boost for the city centre.

A luxury look and feel for John Lewis’ latest store
Working in partnership with Cosentino, our team designed and delivered the newly refurbished entrance of the centre’s eye-catching John Lewis store.

Using a Sky-Frame Plain system, the glass floor to ceiling doors can retract effortlessly, creating both a stunning and practical addition to the shop’s façade that matches its high-end aesthetics. The doors slide away into a sleek, hidden pocket; a UK-first for this type of design.

In addition to its obvious visual benefits, the Sky-Frame system is incredibly practical. It allows for plenty of light distribution, creating a bright and airy shopping experience for customers, and meets the highest standards for insulation and safety. The tracks are unobtrusively embedded at floor level, making them wheelchair-friendly and barrier-free.

How does the Sky-Frame Plain system work?
Sky-Frame sliding doors contain a hidden transition between the inside and the outside that is flush-fitted with the floor, allowing the glass to glide along the narrow gap. The space between the tracks is covered by the same flooring as the interior, reinforcing the feeling of a free-flowing transition between the inside and outside.

This technology is 100% Swiss-made and a beautiful example of how precise engineering can be utilised as an attractive design element in any commercial or residential building.
